Swango Practica Monday Dance Music @ the Palomar in Santa Cruz:

This is an alternative Tango-Swango practica where I do not play any golden age, tandas, or cortinas. Instead I play contemporary Tango trios, quartets, and orchestras like Estaban Morgado Cuarteto, Quartango, Hugo Diaz, Sexteto Milonguero, Paco Garrido, Roberto Alvarez Orchestra, Orchesta Tipica, Juan Carlos Caceres, Joe Powers, etc. I also play local favorites like Tangonera and Trio Garufa. I mix in nuevo music like Otros Aires, Fernando Samalea, Bajofondo, Narcotango, Gotan, Seis Luces, Carla Puliese, CT Tango Ensemble, Melingo, Supervielle, Tango Crash, etc. I also play some contemporary blues and jazz (Dianna Krall, Buddy Guy, Van Morrison, etc), salsa (courtesy of Trace), and West Coast Swing (courtesy of Rupert). I try to play a few tango songs and then something different, depending on the crowd. We welcome you to come out and try our alternative fusion flavor!

Old Swango Blues Music:

I’m going to be trying out a new music format in 2008. It’s going to go something like this for a typical dance:

9-10pm: Swing It Old School Hour (kick it to classic swing and jazz by Benny Goodman, Ernestine Anderson, Count Basie, Barbara Morrison, Dianna Krall, Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra, etc…)

10-11pm: Funky Blue Soul Hour (dance to the coolest tunes by Aretha Franklin, Gnarls Barkley, Temptations, Marc Broussard, Marvin Gaye, Foxy, Rick James, Buddy Guy, BB King, etc…)

11-12am: Dark Swing Hour (push the edge by partner dancing to music by The Cure, The Feint, Muse, Depeche Mode, Vast, Peter Murphy, Nine Inch Nails, Soul Coughing, Radiohead, etc…)

Other artists I like to play:

Ray Charles, Joe Williams, Dianna Krall, Gotan Project, Solomon Burke, Gene Harris, Lou Rawls, Oscar Peterson, Barbara Morrison, Buddy Guy, Ruth Brown, Jimmy Witherspoon, Astor Piazzolla, Mel Torme, BB King, Louis Armstrong, John Hammond, Nat King Cole, Ernestine Anderson, Johnny Harmon, LaVerne Baker, Bill Withers, Eva Cassidy, Gladys Knight, John Lee Hooker, Sam Taylor, Ben King, Tab Benoit, Nina Simone, Chris Conner, Michael Buble, Jimmy Vaughan, Ann Peebles, Beautiful Bobby Blackmon, Harry Connick Jr., Narcotango, Trudy Lynn, Bobby Blue Bland, Aretha Franklin, Junior Wells, Soul Sisters, etc…
